Who this is for
Most often it is an adult son or daughter. A parent is in the hospital or a care facility, and a document needs to be signed and notarized this week. You are already stretched thin, and you do not want this to turn into a fight with the front desk.
It can also be a spouse, a friend, or a social worker helping a patient. Whoever is calling, the signer is the patient, and the patient must be able to understand what they are signing and choose to sign it.
What the visit covers
Marcie Ramirez, a California Notary Public first commissioned in 2003, comes to the patient's room or a space the staff provides. She checks the patient's identification, confirms that the patient is aware and willing, watches the signature, and completes the notarial certificate and her journal entry.
If the document itself still needs to be prepared, Deanna Wilson, our registered Legal Document Assistant, can prepare it at your direction before the visit. That is a separate service with its own price.
- Travel to a hospital, skilled nursing facility, assisted living or memory care community
- Identity check and a conversation with the signer to confirm awareness and willingness
- Notarization of the patient's signature and any other signers present
- An entry in Marcie's notary journal for every notarization
- Each additional notarized signature at $15
What to have ready
- The patient's current government issued photo ID, such as a driver license, state ID card or passport. Check that it is with the patient and not at home.
- The patient must be alert, understand what they are signing, and want to sign it. The notary will speak with the patient directly.
- The complete document, with every page. Leave it unsigned until the notary is there.
- The name on the document should match the name on the patient's ID.
- Let the nurse or case manager know a notary is coming, so medication, therapy or procedures can be planned around the visit if possible.
- If the patient cannot hold a pen easily, tell us when you book so we can talk about it before the visit.
- The room or unit number and any visitor check in steps at the facility.

Questions
Yes. Marcie visits hospitals and care facilities across San Diego County. Hospital appointments start at $115, and each additional notarized signature is $15. Your price is confirmed when we call.
A notary cannot notarize for someone who is not aware of what they are signing or not willing to sign. If the patient is not alert when Marcie arrives, the notarization cannot go forward at that time. It often helps to ask the nurse when the patient is usually most awake and book for then.
Tell us before the visit. California allows identity to be confirmed through credible witnesses in some situations, and a family member may also be able to bring the ID from home. We will talk through the options with you, but we cannot promise a notarization without acceptable identification.
A notary notarizes the signature of the person signing, and that person must sign for themselves. If you are unsure who should sign a document, that is a question for an attorney, not the notary.
Yes. Deanna Wilson, our registered and bonded Legal Document Assistant, can prepare a power of attorney or healthcare directive at your direction, and Marcie can notarize it at the bedside. Deanna cannot choose the document for you or tell you what it should say.
